Cantinas in Mexico City / Bar La Pelusa, a traditional cantina near the Teatro Blanquita
Spotless and welcoming, this cantina offers a clean and comfortable atmosphere, excellent service, and a great vibe.
By Alejandro Pohlenz
I like the topic of language and words, especially since Spanish is one of the three most spoken languages in the world and I say it is the richest. Pelusa (besides being an Argentine comedian) means: "very fine hair of some fruits; hair that comes off fabrics; fine hair that appears on people's faces; accumulation of hair and dirt under furniture and the funniest one, envy typical of children" (so would you say: "I have pelusa of you!"?). The meaning of this word in Chile: street child.
Very central
It doesn't seem very appropriate to be part of the name of a bar: it would give the impression of being dusty or full of dirt... Of course, this bar located on a privileged corner, between La Alameda Central and the Teatro Blanquita, has no dust nor is it dirty (nor does it have incipient hair). The interior of the place is neat. Next to the bar there is a painting of Don Quixote and Sancho at sunset; in the middle, a screen, where soccer is the star, and above some strange surrealist paintings.
Pork shank and roast goat
What is not surreal at all is the botana. In La Pelusa they serve you the first drink and the accompaniments arrive at the speed of lightning. The protagonist in this department is the chamorro (pork shank) on Fridays, although there is also cabrito (roast goat). The jukebox has been manipulated so much that the keys have been blurred so that the choice of music is "eeny, meeny, miny, moe." Sometimes La Pelusa plays the music too loud, which kills the conversation. It is a disease of many establishments. It especially affects people who want to share adventures and misadventures with their friends and who are already of a certain age. A curiosity of this cantina is that it appeared in the series Swat (which they broadcast on Star+).
