Mezcal, much older than tequila, can be made from nearly 40 different types of agave (some with exotic names like tobalá, madrecuixe, or tepeztate). Tequila, on the other hand, comes from just one: the blue agave (Agave tequilana Weber). Both drinks are iconic in Mexico.

The Museum

Another essential part of Mexican culture is Plaza Garibaldi. (I remember we talked some time ago about El Tenampa, which emerged, like the plaza, in 1925.) The ultimate expression of Mexican identity is, therefore, tequila, mezcal, and Plaza Garibaldi. The institution that brings this together is the Tequila and Mezcal Museum—could it get any more Mexican? The museum, founded in 2010, has a modern glass façade adorned with colorful agave leaves. On the first floor, the process of making tequila and mezcal is showcased, alongside an impressive collection of 300 bottles from across Mexico. There are also exhibits related to mariachi history, fitting perfectly with its surroundings.

A Stunning View of the Plaza

On the second floor is the space we highlight here: the Terrace of the Tequila and Mezcal Museum. This balcony offers a privileged view of the plaza—a remarkable feature in itself. Of course, there’s a wide variety of tequila and mezcal available, including tasting experiences (highly recommend using Uber if you plan to sample). For non-drinkers, there are fresh aguas frescas. The food is authentically Mexican: tacos al pastor and cochinita, flautas, quesadillas, chiles rellenos, pozole, and of course, mole.

Must-try: obviously, the tequila tasting.
