Mexican Restaurants in The World's 50 Best
The list of the world’s 50 best restaurants has just been released. Two of them are Mexican.

By Alejandro Pohlenz
Restaurant Magazine began its life in the late 1990s. This is relevant because, in 2002, it published the first ranking of the 50 Best Restaurants (‘The 50 Best’). This list quickly became a global benchmark. In the 2000s, William Reed Business Media acquired Restaurant… and now controls the much-talked-about The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
Unlike the methodology used for awarding Michelin Stars, which involves anonymous judges visiting the establishments, in this ranking of the best dining spots, the “gastronomic inspectors” are 1,100 and somewhat well-known individuals (bloggers, critics, and experts) who, in fact, don’t mind accepting free meals and other perks. (This is why some consider this list controversial). It’s worth noting that once a restaurant reaches first place, it cannot be chosen for the list the following year, so it is moved to another highly prestigious category: the “best of the best.”
Quintonil
Well, the list has just been released (June 18). First place went to Maido, a restaurant located in Lima, Peru. Now, hold onto your hats for third place! It’s none other than Quintonil in Polanco, Mexico City. I’ve mentioned before that the partnership of Jorge Vallejo and Alejandra Flores, which began their rapid rise with a small eatery in 2011, had turned this restaurant into such a success that it had earned two Michelin Stars. Now, we are proud that Quintonil has made it onto the podium as one of the top three restaurants in the world. Excuse me, but sometimes you have to crow about your achievements.
Rosetta
Another restaurant that made it onto the illustrious list of the world’s 50 best is Rosetta, led by Elena Reygadas. I mentioned in a note dedicated solely to Rosetta about the pre-Columbian chinampas, that she had won the award for Best Female Chef and her restaurant, which opened 15 years ago, had earned a Michelin Star. Now, it has reached this prestigious list of the world’s finest restaurants, and we are thrilled about this extraordinary achievement. (It is currently in 46th place, but we are confident it will continue to rise).
Congratulations to Quintonil and Rosetta!
