Cantina in Mexico City / Cantina Casa Abundio, dominoes, beer and rock 'n' roll
A cantina where "caguamas" reign supreme and reggae plays on Saturdays.
By Alejandro Pohlenz
Cantina Casa Abundio, which boasts 62 years of presence, has an optimal location: it is in Buenavista, near the corner formed by Moctezuma and Zaragoza streets. The Buenavista neighborhood is so named because the Hacienda de los Marqueses de Buenavista was located there.
Reggae Saturdays
The highlight of Cantina Casa Abundio is "reggae Saturdays" (a musical genre that emerged in Jamaica in the 1960s). I cannot confirm, but it seems that the reggae and ska musical selection on Saturdays encourages the movement of legs and hips, of men and women (in the 80s the law that prevented ladies and young ladies from entering canteens was repealed).
All with beer
The liquid specialty of Cantina Casa Abundio is beer (my favorite drink). A good number of drinks made with this elixir are sold in that place: the bull, with rum, lemon, ice and beer (quite disturbing), the beer mojito (sweet with mint), the black velvet (champagne and beer; I didn't know this one... aren't there too many bubbles?), the submarine (the tequila shot is put upside down in the jar) and the micheladas (salt, Valentina, chili powder, Maggie and English sauce); there are with clamato or chamoy.
The botana
Here, as is customary, the rule of three applies: three drinks entitle you to the botana that users rate as "simple, but with good seasoning." The highlights, in addition to the pig's trotter in vinaigrette, a classic cantina snack, are the golden potato quesadillas, the shrimp broth and the totopos in green sauce. It is worth trying the sauce, to see what you think.
