Where to Eat in Satélite / La Barraca Valenciana, Typical Spanish Cuisine in the Northern Part of the City.
At La Barraca Valenciana, you'll find classic entrepanes, Valencian paella, and craft beer.
By Alejandro Pohlenz
In 1988, José García, “El Tío,” envisioned a small place to serve Spanish food that later settled in the heart of Coyoacán, simulating an Iberian tavern. Chef José Miguel García then took the helm of Barraca Valenciana, where the backbone of the menu consists of Spanish tortas. In the communities of Catalonia and Valencia, these are known as entrepanes, which means “bread of any size and shape cut in half, filled with a variety of foods.”
Plaza Satélite
I was 10 years old when I first visited Plaza Satélite, which was completed in 1971. The epicenter of the shopping mall featured a massive dome that housed a striking metal sculpture designed by French sculptor Olivier Seguin. What a wonderful impact it had on a child!
I mention Plaza Satélite because Barraca Valenciana opened a branch in “La Terraza” at El Palacio de Hierro (on the fourth level). Their menu boasts enticing sections: classics, plated dishes, snacks, and pintxos (small portions of food on a slice of bread), as well as montaditos (similar to tortas).
Valencian Cuisine
The most popular items on the menu include patatas bravas, fried calamari, camarones cucaracha (with butter and garlic), ham croquettes, octopus, huevos rotos, paella, and entrepanes filled with boquerón, anchovies, calamari, and more.
The craft beer at Barraca, designed by the chef, is called Espantapájaros. You can order it on draft or in bottles.
What We Love: You must try the paella.
