Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa is one of the most famous soccer players in Mexico, having played in five World Cups with the national team. In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Memo claims to have contributed to the design of the Torta Suiza (with four cheeses) served at Tortas Don Polo, the family restaurant founded by his uncle, Don Leopoldo Sánchez Preciado, in 1956.

Who owns Tortas Don Polo?

Don Leopoldo started his business with a capital of 50 pesos in a small stall in the Centro Urbano Miguel Alemán, in the Del Valle neighborhood. This multi-family building, constructed between 1947 and 1949, was one of the first massive constructions in Mexico City, known for its zigzag design and functionality.

Due to the success of his tortas, Don Leopoldo moved to a larger location in 1960, on Félix Cuevas Street, where it still operates today. Currently, the descendants of the founder, who are direct relatives of the famous goalkeeper, run the business.

The Menu

The tortas are versatile and include ingredients such as egg, sausage, stuffed pepper, chorizo, ham, leg, avocado, chicken, arrachera, milanesa, and Cuban. The atmosphere is simple and informal, perfect for enjoying with family. Don’t forget to order the natural juices—they are spectacular!

Tortas Don Polo also offers breakfasts, soups (like consommé, rice, and spaghetti), and a menu featuring steak, chicken, beef, or milanesa. They also provide delivery and pickup services. There are nice tables on the sidewalk, and they even have stuffed pepper tortas!

Food Police Insider Tip: Don’t be shy—order the Cuban torta.
