Step back in time and experience the thrill of live music and dance at this historic venue.
Lugares para bailar CDMX / Salón Los Ángeles, el único salón de baile de los años 30 que perdura hasta hoy

By Alejandro Pohlenz

This venue was used to film scenes from the blockbuster movie ¡Esquina bajan!, directed by Alejandro Galindo and released in 1948 at the Cine Colonial. It was also used to capture images for an exceptional series called Sense 8, by the Wachowski sisters. I mention only two of the great happenings that have taken place in this dance hall in the Guerrero neighborhood.

Salón Los Ángeles, since its opening on July 26, 1937, has become a central gear in the culture of Mexico City and the entire country. Its relevance is summarized in this famous phrase: "whoever doesn't know Los Angeles, doesn't know Mexico."

The life and times of Salón Los Ángeles

This hall, with 150 tables and capacity for 600 people, is located where there used to be a coal warehouse. When coal was replaced by oil and later gas, Miguel Nieto Alcántara was convinced to start a dance hall. Surely he never expected the venue to still be alive after 87 years.

Live music only

In Salón Los Ángeles people danced mambo (Pérez Prado premiered his Mambo No. 5 there in 1949), danzón, cha-cha-cha and swing; now, to the rhythm of significant groups that play live, you can move your feet on a 1,500 square meter dance floor to the sound of cumbia, salsa and Cuban son. Salón Los Ángeles hosted Sonora Santanera at the beginning of their rise in 1960, the year in which they recorded the very famous La Boa.

It will not disappear

The grandson of Miguel Alcántara tells us something that fills our souls with joy: "...we are not going to let it die; we are not going to close and build a building, no way."
